Dad is 70

Who would have thought. A few heart attacks and a quadruple bypass and the dude keeps on ticking. May we only have another 70.

Oh Joy

The winter of our discontent will soon be over and a new age will be dawning soon.

A lot to be thankful for this year.

Because someday....

How far you go in your life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.-- George Washington Carver

Jazz Fest 2008 Friday 4/25 Third grid

Ah, the first two sets killed. Get a beer and shuffle along to the next venue.

Theresa Andersson - Theresa recently recorded her newest album in her kitchen. The record was produced by Swedish singer-songwriter/producer Tobias Froberg (Peter Moren’s upcoming solo album) and mixed by Linus Larsson (Peter Bjorn and John, Mercury Rev.) Theresa played all the instruments on the album except for a duet with legendary New Orleans producer and composer Allen Toussaint (The Meters, Dr. John, The Band, Elvis Costello) and a duet with Norwegian singer Ane Brun. Due for release Summer 2008!

The Iguanas - a roots rock band whose sound has been described as combining Chicano rock, R&B, Conjunto and various Latin styles into a deep groove.

Big Sam's Funky Nation - Last year coming home, I met Big Sam in the airport and had a short but nice conversation. Combining old and new funk, a set I shall not miss.

James Rivers Movement - a mixture of Rock, progressive Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and Gospel; the sort of music that implies something for everybody when it's played. Rivers, one of only three Jazz musicians ever known to play the bagpipes, would probably call himself a saxophonist, but his forte is really an amazing musical dexterity that has helped him master a dozen other instruments.

Barbara Lynn - an American rhythm and blues guitarist and singer. She played piano as a child, but switched to guitar. Inspired by blues artists Guitar Slim and Jimmy Reed, and pop acts Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee, she created an all-female band, Bobbie Lynn and Her Idols. Her first single "You'll Lose A Good Thing" was a #1 R&B hit and Top 10 pop hit in 1962 and was later a country hit for Freddy Fender. In 2002 electronic musician Moby sampled Lynn's catchy "I'm A Good Woman" on his album 18. If Big Sam wasn't playing this is where I would be.

Andrew Hall's Society Brass Band - Style: "Traditional New Orleans" . That's nice.

The Zydepunks - uhm, like, zydeco and uhm punk music. A little Irish jig thrown in. Looks like fun.

Creole Wild West Mardi Gras Indians - have to see live to believe. What happens when Mummers become dehydrated.

Lady Tambourine - A New Orleans institution of higher learning.

Jazz Fest 2008 Friday 4/25 Second grid

And after we eat some Shrimp Monica and have some strawberry lemonade, we will be ready for the second sets:

Kim Carson and the Casualties

Viváz Latin Band is a musical group that uniquely combines Latin Jazz, Salsa, and Caribbean sounds. Viváz was formed in New Orleans, Louisiana in April of 2001. The band is comprised of musicians from many different countries including Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, and the United States. A highly original sound is achieved by these energetic musicians who combine traditional Latin music styles with innovative ideas.

Otra! OTRA attempts to bring a rock n' roll attitude and excitement to its live performances, encouraging audience members to 'do their own thing' on the dance floor in an effort to help listeners relate to the music in a new way. In this way OTRA hopes to introduce many new listeners to afro-cuban jazz...not by watering it down or fusing it with hip-hop cliches, but with honest, passionate performances that intrigue the ear and delight the soul!

Amina Figarova Sextet

J. Monque'D Blues Band J. Monque'D has been entertaining audiences in New Orleans since the 60's. He's perfected good time Blues into an epic artform: solid musicianship, and a flair for making those who listen to him feel good. It's no wonder that he was inducted into the the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

The Original Dixieland Jazz Band (well not the originals from 1917)

Joe Hall

Real Untouchables Brass Band

Reverend Mark and The Gospel Stars

There are two others I am skipping over, but there is lots of meat here.

Jazz Fest 2008 Friday 4/25 first grid

Ok, going to try to get my grid in order as well as my NCAA bracket. Let's see what I can find on the web, hear on the web, watch on the web. First slot listening:

Susan Cowsill Band - The singer/songwriter made her initial mark on popular culture at the tender age of eight with The Cowsills, the 60s family pop group that not only scored Top Ten singles The Rain, the Park and Other Things, Hair and We Can Fly but also served as the real-life inspiration for TV's fictional Partridge Family.

KUMBUKA AFRICAN DRUM & DANCE COLLECTIVE - dedicated to the preservation of African and African-American folklore through the medium of dance, music and song. KUMBUKA consists of fifteen men, women and children, ranging in ages 9 to 55 years.

ZION TRINITY......Songwriters who sing in the genres of Reggae, Jazz, Funk, & African Ritual music. ZION Trinity captivates the masses with powerful harmony & original music to feed the soul.

delgado community college jazz - nope

Rufus "Rip" Wimberly
Blues Guitarist
Rufus "Rip" Wimberly was born in Arcadia, Louisiana on December 7, 1926. He now resides in Tallulah, Louisiana where he plays blues guitar in the Bits 'N Pieces Blues band. Rufus first began playing the guitar as a child and learned to play by ear from family members and community members. In Rip's blues band, all of the members are of Afro-French culture that is evident through their music.

New Orleans drummer Albert “June” Gardner recorded “99 Plus One” b/w “Mustard Greens” soon after his gig in Sam Cooke’s band ended with the singer’s untimely, tragic death in 1964. Gardner was hired by Cooke around 1960, replacing another New Orleans drummer, Leo Morris (a/k/a Idris Muhammad), and played on some sessions but mostly on the road with the singer. He can be heard on Cooke’s At The Copa and Live At The Harlem Square Club, 1963 albums. After this first single for Hot Line, Gardner did many more instrumental sessions as a leader over the next few years; but only one other single was issued, as far as I know, “Hot Seat” (with an unknown flip).

The Figs - this is my pick

Voices of Distinctions - Gospel, white bread

Jonno Fishberg - zydeco

What do you mean you didn't tell me you knew what I wanted before I knew?

Jakob Nielsen is an industry icon, having literally written the book on web site usability and customer experience. But he sometimes can be an overly meticulous fool. I get his Alertbox column regularly and today it had this piece:

PERSONALIZATION OFTEN FAILS
Disney recently released the third DVD in the collected series of Donald Duck cartoons. After reading the review in The New York Times, I promptly ordered a copy from Amazon.com.
I had read through Amazon's page of personalized recommendations for me, but it never told me that Donald Duck 3 was out. That's despite the fact that I bought vol. 1 from Amazon when it was released in 2003 and I also bought vol. 2 from them shortly after its release date in 2005.
A customer who bought both vol. 1 and vol. 2 should be an obvious candidate for being told about vol. 3. Especially for something that's only published every two years, so that the customer is unlikely to remember to seek out the product on their own accord. Yet, I had to learn about this new product from reading dead trees that are dumped in my driveway in the morning, not from Amazon's famed personalized recommendations.

What does Amazon care? I bought from them anyway. But that's because I am an exceedingly loyal customer, having bought 521 items there since 1996. Most users are less loyal and could easily have decided to pick up their cartoons elsewhere. (Overly meticulous disclosure: Disney is one of our consulting clients. But I have liked Donald Duck cartoons for 45 years, starting long before I became a usability consultant.)

Wow. This is a case in point of how perfection gets in the way of reality. So the database records for good 'ol Jake on Amazon, which ar 12 years old and have over 521 product entries (not to mention his visits to products, his reviews, if he made any and I have a feeling he believes his opinions count, etc.) failed him. I wonder what recommendations they did show him and how often he actually makes a purchase off a recommendation. He doesn't tell us that. And does he tell us anything about the other 519 products he has purchased that would enable us to imagine what products might be recommended in the too few slots or email blasts he must receive.

He is buying about 3 products monthly on average. And we don't know if he made 250 or 20 purchases since he last bought a Duck cartoon. And what about the margin on a disney cartoon dvd vs the margins on some of the books that might fall into his recommendations? Disney is a good negotiator and is a strong brand. Do you think Amazon wants to push low margin or high margin products?

I imagine Jake would like it if every waiter knew what he wanted to order before he saw the menu and that his analyst would tell him when he was going to have an anxiety attack before he needed to take his xanax. Give it a rest and keep pushing your clients to do more better but ease up on the need for perfection based on your whims. Maybe Jakob just wants to bully Amazon into giving him some freebies.

Been playing in Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn. I like LinkedIn for the business contacts, Facebook for my relatives and some friends and MySpace for bands and music. I also saw one of these on MySpace and wanted to test to see if I could draw it in here - and I can!
